Bastyr University partners with national HerbDay eventFirst annual national event inspires two weeks of special public activities at Bastyr(Kenmore, WA, September 21, 2006) — Bastyr University is partnering with the HerbDay Coalition to help produce and celebrate the first annual national HerbDay, which occurs on Saturday, October 14, 2006, featuring activities in more than half the states in America during that week. The five national non-profits working together as the HerbDay Coalition include the American Botanical Council, American Herbalists Guild, American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, American Herbal Products Association and United Plant Savers. HerbDay is a series of public outreach and educational events celebrating the importance of herbs and botanical medicine. Nationwide activities will occur at botanical gardens, universities, retail stores, parks and more throughout North America. Activities are produced by host venues, including hands-on workshops, author talks, lectures and classes, cooking demonstrations, gardening programs and more. In addition to local programs at host venues, national events are scheduled to be held at the U.S. Botanic Garden on the national mall in Washington, D.C. on October 13-14. Bastyr University’s Robin DiPasquale, ND, RH (AHG) (doctor of naturopathic medicine and registered herbalist, American Herbalists Guild), was specially invited to speak at the national event. Dr. DiPasquale is the Chair of Bastyr University’s Botanical Medicine Department. Various state and federal legislators will also be on hand for activities in Washington, D.C. As a specially recognized HerbDay Partner, Bastyr University will be offering two weeks of unique activities open to the public, all to be held at the Bastyr campus in Kenmore, Washington. The first week features faculty and staff workshops and presentations, and week two provides opportunities for Bastyr students to present additional topics. The following presentations are all FREE, held at noon in the Bastyr University auditorium: · Monday, 10/9/06: “The Top 10 Herbs for Children,” presented by Sheila Kingsbury, ND Dr. Kingsbury is a core faculty member at Bastyr University, a practicing naturopathic physician and the mother of four children. She will share her extensive knowledge of how to keep children healthy with herbal medicines. · Tuesday, 10/10/06: “Strategies for Making Herbal Medicines More Palatable,” presented by Kara Burkhart, ND Dr. Kara Burkhart teaches botanical medicine at Bastyr University, and has a private naturopathic medicine practice. She will provide ideas and recipes for making herbal medicines taste better for both children and adults. · Wednesday, 10/11/06: “Herbal Medicine to Support the Menopausal Transition,” presented by Robin DiPasquale, ND Dr. DiPasquale is the Chair of the Botanical Medicine Department at Bastyr University. She also has a private naturopathic medicine practice and serves as a supervising physician at the Bastyr campus health clinic shifts. She will discuss individual herbs and formulations that can assist women through various changes of menopause. · Thursday, 10/12/06: “Herbal Medicine and Men’s Health,” presented by Eric Yarnell, ND Dr. Yarnell is a core faculty member at Bastyr University. He co-owns Heron Botanicals and has authored many botanical medicine books and articles. He maintains a naturopathic medicine practice where his special interest is men’s health. · Friday, 10/13/06: “Nutritive Herbs: Food as Medicine,” presented by Jenny Perez, Bastyr Medicinal Herb Garden Manager Ms. Perez is a graduate of Bastyr University’s Herbal Sciences program. In addition to her work as Bastyr’s Medicinal Herb Garden Manager, she has also worked at The Herbalist in Seattle, preparing herbal remedies. Nationwide HerbDay Events Listed Online(September 8, 2006) — HerbDay, a new national event, will be celebrated all across the nation on Saturday, October 14, or during the weeks before and after that date. Retail stores, schools, farms and botanical gardens, and public parks are hosting a wide range of activities and site-specific events, including lectures and workshops, book signings and talks by renowned authors, guided plant identification walks with experienced botanists familiar with regional habitats, in-store demonstrations, seasonal herbal handcrafts, in-store product demonstrations, children’s activities, and more.The HerbDay website, http://www.herbday.org/, lists these events, and more are being added on an ongoing basis. For example, Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocers, a 24-store chain in Colorado and New Mexico, recently agreed to honor HerbDay in their stores, joining other major health stores GNC, Great Earth Vitamins, Vitamin Shoppe, Vitamin World, Whole Foods Market, several independent co-operative grocery stores, and smaller shops. HerbDay Plans Run Wild!(July 25, 2006) — HerbDay fun is increasing as events to celebrate herbs are registered at the event’s website: www.herbday.org.
